Powell Has Sotomayor’s Back

Colin Powell watching out for his home girlI'm just trying to think back when Colin Powell has anything but liberal stereotype-talking points to issue about Republicans?

"What we can't continue to have is to have somebody like a Judge Sotomayor … called a racist, a reverse racist and she ought to withdraw her nomination because we're mad at her," Powell said in an interview broadcast Sunday on "State of the Union" on CNN. Powell made it clear that he was referring to critics outside the Senate.

Oh, I guess that could be us. Mr. Powell, who is "we"? Please name a name. Which Republican called Sonia-From-His-Block a racist? I do admit hearing the argument that using gender and/or race to make judicial opinions may not be the best way to form them. I do remember it being said that someone commenting on their perspective as a wise white male or female would have been called a racist, while Sotomayor got a media pass because she's a Latina.

Powell said Sotomayor has "an open and liberal bent of mind, but that's not disqualifying. But she seems to have a judicial record that seems to be balanced and tries to follow the law." Powell, a Republican who supported Obama, said his party still is not sensitive enough toward minorities.

If the Republican Party isn't sensitive to minorities, how could Colin Powell have been appointed the first black National Security Advisor under President Reagan, the first black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by President Bush (41), and the first black Secretary of State under President Bush (43)… all Republicans?
