One of the nation’s leading papers asked me to write a description of the result of the election, BEFORE the election was held, to run on the day after. They never ran the piece. But you can read it:
“If campaign promises are the gauge, expect our next president to be our first emperor, unfettered by the olden Constitution, decreeing policy at will, heedless and free from the constraints of limited government and delegated powers that made this nation exceptional. As our slide into statism accelerates (no candidates exhibited brakes), the public, largely uneducated on principles of freedom that made America the greatest country the world has ever seen, with unparalleled abundance and prosperity, will actually cheer their rapid descent into tax-oppressed wage-slavery and rule by fiat — as long as the beer stays cold and the TV stays on.
“The purpose of government, according to our Founders, is to protect our freedom so we can do the rest. Today, people ignorantly demand and politicians speciously promise anything under the sun — at someone else’s expense — an impossible model attracting support from useful idiots. But hope springs eternal — the worse it gets the better it gets. As the unchecked government juggernaut picks up speed, the freedom movement will grow also, and a return to constitutional governance and love of personal liberty — a libertarian mindset in the classical sense — will sweep the nation. If we’re lucky.”
