People constantly remind us how awfully blue Massachusetts is. It's not only because Democrats here have this great ground game. More because Massachusetts Republican leadership consistently make the same mistakes yet believe they know everything about how to win elections.
The following is an email I received this morning from one of the justifiably disgruntled.
Memo To; All Massachusetts State Committee Members, Selected Massachusetts Republican Activists.
Ladies and Gentleman,
Here is the 2008 spending in/by the two MAGOP accounts, a state and a Federal Account.
As you can see Combined expenditures in both accounts (2008) $946,626.23, and combined expenditures on candidates (2008) $83,998.94.
Less than 10% was spent on 18 candidates within the state and on 2 candidates running for statewide office, making a total of 20 candidates out of 47 Republicans running for State/National seats receiving funds/support.
The 2006 and 2007 statistics were created by another individual. And were sent in an email blast back in Jan/Feb 2008 I kept same and verified the figures, then using that format provided YTD 2008.
I cannot find any money spent in 2008 out of state. That does not mean it did not happen, it means it was not identified as such in the filings by the MAGOP. All should be aware of the numbers of phone banking set up around the state in 2008, a majority of which were calling into N.H. for McCain.
Additionally at least two fundraising efforts were completed here in Massachusetts and involved current and former members of the MAGOP, for out of State Candidates. (Romney Fundraiser for the U.S. Senate Seat in N.H. at the Taj in Boston, and one other)
Of note is the MAGOP purchase of two Romney fund raising lists from the Romney for President Campaign. Additionally the feeling is that the primary goal of a new Chair is almost solely to raise funds and that was the reason the current chair was "selected". In 2008 the MAGOP spent $47,505.00 on Fund Raising Companies: and spent over $4,000.00 on interns for fund raising efforts. There is no way to identify what the chair raised via "connections" and phone calls, There is evidence that those efforts lacked, based on the need to hire professionals and purchase lists from someone alleged to be a Massachusetts Republican.
Money was sent out of State in 2006 providing funds to several other states GOP efforts and a donation to an individual running for Senate from Alaska.
Again in 2008, it is apparent a bulk of the funds donated to MAGOP were used for keeping the GOP machine operational, not for Candidate Support.
Currently the National State Committeeman has been calling or setting up meetings with yet another hand picked Chair, who has been a State Committee person for less than one year, who when asked questions by a fellow State Committeeman on the 10 issues of concern to Massachusetts Republicans, fared poorly on a point scale of 0-100.
Chairs have been hand picked in the last several appointments and what has that accomplished? If you total up the win loss record of/for the MAGOP since 2002 it reveals is dismal records of repeated failures, resulting in a downward spiral of state and statewide office holders. It is time the State Committee realize that the hand picked leaders of this party have failed miserably to accomplish anything.
The vote in January 2009 needs to be an open process, with qualified representation, not merely the chosen one. And all State Committee people should demand debates among interested and qualified candidates, show up for the debates and then make an informed decision and vote what is BEST for your Massachusetts Republican Party, not what is best for a few people at the top, thrusting yet another pick down your throat.
Welcome to my world.
