California dreamin’ on such a winter’s day:
The California secretary of state should refuse to allow the state’s 55 Electoral College votes to be cast in the 2008 presidential election until President-elect Barack Obama verifies his eligibility to hold the office, alleges a California court petition filed on behalf of former presidential candidate Alan Keyes and others.
Here’s a PDF of the lawsuit.
Obama’s lawyers should simply present this ironclad defense: “Constitution, shmonstitution!” — Because in a California court, that’s enough for a sweeping legal victory.
Update: Some commentators, such as Joseph Farah, are demanding that Obama produce his birth certificate, but unless he has to, fuhgeddaboudit.
Here’s what I’m not aware of: Who exactly is in charge of verifying that a president-elect is a natural born citizen? In other words, who’s the doorman to the presidency? Have past presidents had to submit their birth certificates for inspection before assuming office? And if so, to whom did they have to submit them? Unless these questions can be answered, the rest is just directionless squawking.
I don’t know the answer to those questions, but maybe somebody out there does.
