Opinion Matters

Some things make one think of the Wizard of Oz.

Farewell to ‘predictable, tiresome and dreary’ women’s studies

Women’s studies, which came to prominence in the wake of the 1960s feminist movement, is to vanish from British universities as an undergraduate degree this summer. Dwindling interest in the subject means that the final 12 students will graduate with a BA in women’s studies from London’s Metropolitan University in July.

Universities offering the course, devised as the second wave of the women’s rights movement peaked, attracted students in their hundreds during the late 1980s and early 1990s, but the mood on campuses has changed. Students, it seems, no longer want to immerse themselves in the sisterhood’s struggle for equality or the finer points of feminist history.

The disappearance of a course that women academics fought so long and hard to have taught in universities has divided opinion on what this means for feminism. Is it irrelevant in today’s world or has the quest for equality hit the mainstream?

The course’s critics argue that women’s studies became its own worst enemy, remaining trapped in the feminist movement of the 1970s while women and society moved on.

“Feminist scholarship has become predictable, tiresome and dreary, and most young women avoid it like the plague,” said Christina Hoff Sommers, resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute for public policy research in Washington and author of Who Stole Feminism? “British and American societies are no longer patriarchal and oppressive ‘male hegemonies’. But most women’s studies departments are predicated on the assumption that women in the West are under siege. What nonsense.”

Others believe young women have shied away from studying feminist theory because they would rather opt for degrees that more obviously lead to jobs, especially since the introduction of tuition fees.

“[Taking] women’s studies as a separate course may not feel as relevant to women who go to university to help them enter the job market,” said Jean Edelstein, an author and journalist. “As the feminist movement has become increasingly associated with extreme thoughts, women who may have previously been interested in women’s studies may be deterred by these overtones.”

Anyone ruing the degree’s demise can take heart: many gender and equality issues are now dealt with by mainstream courses, from sociology and law to history and English. And many universities, including Oxford, still offer the course to postgraduates.

Mary Evans, visiting fellow at the Gender Institute at the London School of Economics, said: “This final closure does not signal the end of an era: feminist ideas and literature are as lively as ever, but the institutional framework in which they are taught has changed.”

Ms Edelstein added: “Feminist critique should be studied by everyone. If integration into more mainstream courses means more people looking at gender theory and increases the number of people who are aware of the issues, then that is a good thing.”

But Dr Irene Gedalof, who has led the London Metropolitan University women’s studies course for the past 10 years, defended the discipline.

“The women’s movement is less visible now and many of its gains are taken for granted, which fuels the perception there is no longer a need for women’s studies. But while other disciplines now ‘deal’ with gender issues we still need a dedicated focus by academics. Despite the gains women have made, this is just as relevant in today’s world,” she said, blaming the course’s downfall on universities’ collective failure to promote the discipline.

Given that graduate courses in women’s studies are thriving in many countries, such as India and Iran, the decision to stop the course here has surprised many.

Gun Lawsuits Misfire

Posted by Alan Korwin On March - 31 - 2008

The lamestream media told you:

Reeling from wave after wave of gun crime, cities across America have filed lawsuits against gun manufacturers and the gun industry in general, to try to halt the senseless violence they initiate. These righteous lawsuits seek compensation for the acts of criminals, and are being waged by decent upstanding lawyers and smart officials across the land. Efforts to stop the criminals themselves have been hampered by the gun lobby, which seeks to arm criminals and terrorists to increase gun-industry profits, by resisting even sensible gun-control laws, according to protest signs seen at rallies.

The Uninvited Ombudsman notes however that:

Long criticized for using taxpayer funds to stage frivolous lawsuits against an entire industry, and blaming private businesses for the unrelated acts of desperate criminals, experts believe the recent spate of anti-rights lawsuits is actually a cover-up for the failed policies of government agencies nationwide in controlling crime and criminal perpetrators.

With the recent humiliation and resignation of New York governor Eliot Spitzer, a leading figure in the frivolous-lawsuit schemes perpetrated by anti-gun-rights politicians, the National Shooting Sports Foundation has looked into the whereabouts of others who participated in the attempt to close the gun industry through creative legal challenges.

In a shocking discovery, unreported by the same “news” organizations that loudly promoted the lawsuit attacks, a significant number of the lawsuit planners have been arrested, indicted or jailed on a wide assortment of charges. It seems these “valiant fighters for public safety” are in a thick stew of criminal activity themselves. Why this didn’t make page one like the lawsuit stories repeatedly did is unclear.

Charges against the leading figures include tax evasion, embezzlement, mail fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice, torture of criminal suspects, employment scams, extortion, racketeering, wild junkets on taxpayer money, bribery, questionable land deals, illegal campaign funding, kickbacks, perjury, and of course, direct involvement in prostitution. I am not making this up.

When asked, experts said they were not surprised that people involved in complex legal schemes to remove the public’s civil right to arms, were themselves involved in dozens of crimes. Read the list and details yourself.

Whether the Weather

Posted by Alan Korwin On March - 31 - 2008

The lamestream media told you:

“In what could be described as a monsoon dew-over, the National Weather Service will abandon its decades-old system of using dew points to mark the onset of summer thunderstorms and simply set a date,” writes Shaun McKinnon, on the lead page-one story for the Arizona Republic, entitled, “This Year We’ll Know.” The title refers to the monsoon starting date, which changes each year depending on conditions.

“We want to get the focus away from how we determine when it starts, and put the focus on awareness (of) our most violent weather,” said Tony Haffer, the federal agent in charge. By setting dates, public safety agencies can better prepare people for the risks of summer thunderstorms.

In the past ten years, measurements showed the season started between June 17 and July 19. The official date is now June 15.

The Uninvited Ombudsman notes however that:

Abandoning scientific principles altogether, climatologists in Arizona have decided to stop measuring conditions and simply declare a date on which the annual desert monsoon conditions begin. Whether Mother Nature agrees with the plan, or if the declared date will actually mean anything is uncertain.

“Have they lost their minds?” asked one critic who preferred to remain unnamed. “The dew-point measurements gave hard data upon which to form a rational judgment, and we can see that the monsoon conditions began over a nearly five-week period each year for the past decade.” Picking some averaged date off a calendar can’t possibly do that, he claims. “It’s a good thing they’re not managing global warming,” he said, a fact that could not be immediately confirmed.

Newspaper reporter Shaun McKinnon dutifully reported the government announcement, getting the details of the press release correct on page one, so no correction is needed, as usual. He did however fail to ask how picking a date instead of taking measurements comports with the scientific method.

“Why should we, the government, be burdened with taking measurements and doing an analysis of conditions, when we can just issue an edict and rely on that?” said one estimated government spokeslady. “If we can’t do that for such minor issues as science, how can we justify it for taxes, social programs or war? Think of the efficiency, and all the money it might save. Money doesn’t come from rain clouds, you know.”

The idea that schools might teach students that thunderstorms can be dangerous, or that people already know that, thus eliminating the need for government to pick an official start date for public safety, was not addressed. According to the “news,” thunderstorms produce “damaging winds, dust clouds and flash floods.” Thunder, which can scare people and pets, and lightning, which can kill people and pets, was not mentioned. The change, “reflects advances in weather forecasting technology,” the reporter said, with a straight face.

Hillary Dodges Sniper Fire from Bill Maher

Posted by Doug Powers On March - 31 - 2008

Bill Maher can push the needle on the lib-meter to the “Olbermann” level, but at least he doesn’t believe in a 9/11 conspiracy, and he certainly has Hillary’s number.

Below is part of Maher’s monolog on Hillary Clinton, taken from a recent “Real Time.”

If you don’t have time to watch the three minute clip, there are three highlights:

“Why would you lie about getting shot at? What is she, Fifty-Cent?”

“Hillary: Get elected or lie trying.”

“Hillary said that if Obama’s pastor had been her pastor, she’d have walked out of that church. But she did say that if her pastor had been blown by Monica Lewinsky, she’d have stayed.”

This is the non-bleeped version, so don’t crank this up around sensitive types:

Yahoo! for Women

Posted by Doug Powers On March - 31 - 2008

Good news, ladies — you’ll soon have another website pandering to you:

Yahoo Inc. on Monday launched a site for women between ages 25 and 54, calling it a key demographic underserved by current Yahoo properties.

Yahoo! said the new site for women will be called HooHa! Just kidding… it’s called “Honey, what are you thinking?” Okay, I was kidding again… it’s called “Shine.” Really, it is.

Today’s column at WorldNetDaily revolves around a woman who is suing the government’s Transportation and Security Agency after being told to remove her nipple rings before boarding a flight in Texas.

Were the skies made safer that day? Give a read to the column that I believe sets my new record for movie references, “Piercing boobs at the TSA.”

Bushball

Posted by Doug Powers On March - 30 - 2008

George W. Bush threw out the opening pitch at Nationals Park in Washington on Sunday. The president “brought the heat,” which will only make Gore more certain than ever that Bush is responsible for global warming.

When you’re a lightning rod like Bush is, you know you’re going to get thumped with boos whenever you appear before a random crowd, but in spite of that, the guy can still hurl a good pitch from the top of the hill — and not from halfway to the plate like some politicians.

Remember the thunderous applause and cheers in unity that Bush got before throwing out the first pitch for the Yankees/Mariners World Series game shortly after 9/11? A lot has changed since then, but not the arm:

D.C. v. Heller Eyewitness Wrapup: Part 1

Posted by Alan Korwin On March - 30 - 2008

Like everyone, I’m on pins and needles to see the D.C. v. Heller gun-ban decision, all the speculation is fun but meaningless, but fun. Yes, the Court seemed favorable to an individual right and overturning the D.C. total gun ban, even the lamestream media picked that up. But then you have to think about the Kelo decision (eminent domain) and McCain-Feingold (free-speech ban before an election), and it’s got to worry you. There’s no crystal ball.

The biggest problem I see is difficulty the Court faces in recognizing Second Amendment rights to invalidate the D.C. law, and somehow limiting that decision so laws don’t fall nationwide — the Solicitor General’s concern. OK, so D.C.’s total ban goes too far. How far can D.C. go when it rewrites its law and not offend the Second Amendment? How do you describe that?

Whatever direction the Court provides, D.C. will end up as a model for the rest of the nation, and the Pandora’s Box is open. If D.C.’s law falls, they’ll pass something new, knowing full well it won’t make it to the Supreme Court for another long long time.

It’s lunacy to think there are no legitimate gun laws, as some loonies suggest, and that they all must fall. Disarmed prisoners, sentence enhancements, threats, reckless endangerment, smuggling — the hard-core criminal laws are not at risk, because those bans are not infringement. Those are reasonable, common-sense gun laws everyone wants (except the hard-core criminals).

But concealed carry, public possession, prohibited-places lists, travel, bureaucratic discretion, licenses, registration schemes — these are indeed put in jeopardy by a robust finding for 2A. Maybe the Court will limit itself narrowly to a person at home in D.C. and go no further, which would be a good first step but awfully hollow. And it would of course address the questions posed, and follow SOP for the Court.

Remember, the Bradys wanted this answered:

“Whether the Second Amendment forbids the District of Columbia from banning private possession of handguns  while allowing possession of rifles and shotguns.”

And Heller’s team proposed this as the question:

"Whether the Second Amendment guarantees law-abiding, adult individuals a right to keep ordinary, functional firearms, including handguns, in their homes.”

But the Supremes, in a rare move, posed the issue themselves:

“Whether the following provisions — D.C. Code secs. 7-2502.02(a)(4), 22-4504(a), and 7-2507.02 — violate the Second Amendment rights of individuals who are not  affiliated with any state-regulated militia, but who wish to keep handguns and other firearms for private use in their homes.”

Vaccinations and Drugs are being forced on the Public, Part I

Posted by Felicia Fee Benamon On March - 30 - 2008

Vaccinations and drugs the government says fight against disease are being forced on the public more and more these days. These are vaccines that are not necessary and are having serious health effects on the public.

Suicide. Seizures. Fainting. The list goes on and on. Are those the sort of side effects you would want associated with your medicines or a vaccination? The drug companies that make many drugs on the market today are not concerned with side effects; they are not concerned until they are sued by a victim of a drug. The number of people harmed by vaccinations and “recommended” drugs is larger than is reported.

Just a few days ago, Singulair, an allergy drug came under fire for its link to suicides in children. An ALLERGY drug. I still see the Singulair drug commercial (manufactured by Merck) on the air even after the suicide reports( http://www.boston.com/business/healthcare/articles/2008/03/28/fda_reviewing_asthma_drug_suicide_link/ )!
According to the link, few other drugs offered by Merck have also come under fire.

Also, a recent study came out that mentioned most adults are not getting vaccinated against Shingles, Whooping Cough, and HPV (human papillomavirus). I am not inclined to believe that vaccinations are the direct link to keeping one healthy. I’m certainly not going to become dependent on vaccinations in that aspect…vaccinations with horrendous side effects. ( http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSN23640678 ). If one’s immune system and overall health is up to par, these diseases…shingles and whooping cough would be a non-issue. I will not wreck my immune system by accepting vaccinations that come with negative side effects. No doubt, exposing the body to various immunizations wears on the immune system. The immune system has to fight to build up antibodies against the invading pathogen.

Speaking of HPV, government has pressed the importance that young women get the vaccine Gardasil to guard against HPV ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16948093 ) which causes cervical cancer. But at what risk? Merck, the makers of Gardasil, are all too happy to allow lawmakers to state the case for young women to become vaccinated as they have lobbied to get the vaccination mandatory ( http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSN2022501520070221?pageNumber=2&virtualBrandChannel=0 )…all for financial reasons obviously. At Merck, the Executive Director of Medical Affairs for Vaccines Richard Haupt, mentioned “the media publicity had become a ‘potential distraction’ that was interfering with the company’s objective of promoting widespread use of the product.

“We’ve reevaluated our position, but certainly plan to continue education efforts in different venues, such as with legislators, health departments and coalition groups in various states.” If that isn’t a statement of admission to pushing a product, I don’t know what is!

As fellow writer Cynthia Janak reports, many young women have had their lives turned upside down due to side effects from this drug. Too many young women have had seizures, fainting, numbness, dizziness, etc. ( http://www.renewamerica.us/columns/janak/080328 ) from Gardasil. I say to all mothers and fathers out there, would you put your daughter at risk for adverse reactions such as those mentioned above?

A solution to avoiding sexually transmitted diseases… keep your legs closed. Our children are growing up in such an oversexed society as it is, and it’s about time to introduce those long lost mores to our children. Respect your body (that goes for adults as well), don’t put anything in it that will cause harm.

As I’ve said before, we should be vigilant in taking care of our health and vitality. To leave our bodies and health in the hands of the government is detrimental.

The human body is capable of warding off illness if one makes a concerted effort to stay healthy. In one’s quest to stay healthy, it’s important to make sure there is not another motive behind the “recommendations” of vaccines.

If we truly live in a free society, then adults should be able to make decisions whether or not to get vaccinated or allow their children to be vaccinated.

*If there is any doubt that any symptom you experience after getting a vaccine is related to the vaccine, there should be no hesitation in stating your case to your health professional. This is about your health…you and only you should be in control of what goes into your body. The medical industry is not always right, hence the many adverse reactions people are suffering at the hands of immunizations and drugs. Many in the medical field don’t want to admit that vaccines are causing people horrible side effects. This is either because they lean on medical statistics from various medical organizations that the incidents of adverse reactions to vaccines are rare (which is a lie) or it is because they secretly have some profit motive behind the drug. The harsh reality is that many people are suffering horrible reactions to vaccines and drugs and it is getting underreported. Please remember, medical professionals are not gods.

Stay tuned to my next article on childhood vaccinations.

Five Year War

Posted by Alan Korwin On March - 30 - 2008

The lamestream media told you:

On the fifth anniversary of the Iraq war, we’ve had this many soldiers killed from our country, this many from other countries, we’ve spent this much money, we have endless challenges remaining, there is no end in sight unless you elect the people we tell you to, and the dead include brothers and sisters, family members, parents and good people who volunteered, possibly without realizing what they were getting into. Those surviving have wounds, mental stresses, job problems at home, and many face the horrific prospect of being reassigned to duty.

The Uninvited Ombudsman notes however that:

Tales of heroism and success were notably absent in lamestream reports of the 5th anniversary of this conflict, whether you support the effort or not. The media’s one-sided bias is as reprehensible here as anything they’ve released in recent memory. There were probably some tales of accomplishment in the “news,” but none crossed my desk in print, so maybe this is my fault.

Rebuilt infrastructure, newly opened embassies and consulates, the education of women, significant reductions in Islam-on-Islam bedlam between Sunnis and Shiia, massive blows to al-Qaida members and leadership, and a constant flow of valuable intelligence and oil to points outside Iraq were unreported, for reasons that remain unclear at press time. Honor, courage, valor, bravery, sacrifice, compassion and love were also unmentioned. No correction has been made.

Direct reports from valiant American soldiers deployed in Iraq, which have reached the Uninvited Ombudsman, have an upbeat and positive tone, giving an impression that people doing the heavy lifting, at least, believe things are going better than the media believes. More than one expressed shock and awe on returning home and seeing the drivel being fed to the American public. “You’re not getting the truth,” one soldier said.

In other news, in a small, single-column story buried on page 15 locally, the usually unreliable USA Today reports, “Foreign militants fleeing Iraq, weakened al-Qaida disenchants fighters.” A growing number are fleeing “or attempting to flee,” because their effort is being wrecked by U.S.-led forces.

“They’re being told in their countries of origin by facilitators that, ‘Hey, we’re basically winning the war against the apostates,’ said Brig. Gen. Michael Flynn, intelligence director for Central Command. “They go there and find out it’s not quite the case.” The report claims 90% of suicide bombers are foreign recruits from Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Syria, and most enter from Syria. No mention of the fifth anniversary was included in the brief report.
