Southern legislatures are issuing apologies for historical events in the slave trade that took place between 150 and 400 years ago. Race activists Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and others are now beginning to demand “reparations,” cash payments to modern day blacks for the events of centuries before, playing off white guilt and “multicultural sensitivity” designed to bolster the modern welfare state and the various takings coalitions.
The Uninvited Ombudsman notes however that:
“We’re descended from the people who, at enormous cost in human lives and suffering, set the slaves free,” says one white activist offended by racist reparations demands. “If reparations make any sense at all, blacks ought to pay us reparations,” she said.
“Our rapid climb in socio-economic status, attainment of great position, opportunity and wealth, lives filled with conveniences even kings of the past didn’t enjoy are all cause for celebration, not coerced payments,” according to one black spokesperson. “While some blacks like to say Western civilization benefited from the labor of slaves, well, we did too, in every aspect of our modern lives. Look at the donut folks, not at the hole.”
Nearly every society, and those that have grown to any significant size, have in their history a period involving slavery. Sad though it seems, it is not an aberration, it practically defines the human condition.
See the movie Amazing Grace for a historically accurate account of the heroic efforts to end the slave trade in England. The merchants who ran the trade have long since died, their wills settled, and their debts paid or expired.

This is very old news but I’ll comment anyways.
It was the White Southerners of the 1800’s that had slaves. I say, if Jessie, Al, etc want paid then pay them in the currency of the White Southerners of the 1800’s.
Pay’em in Confederate currency. I’m sure there’s enough floating around.

according to one black spokesperson….he/she seems well educated..
and can see the big picture…southern planters beneffitted from the slave trade, and early Africans benneffitted from exposeure to the most modern country in the world at the time…

While we are in the apologizing for past sins business, I would say that the DeSoto exploration gives the modern state of Alabama quite a conundrum. Does Alabama apologize to the native Alabamians for the treatment the Spanish explorers gave them, or should Alabama apologize to Spain for the way native Alabamians treated the Spanish explorers after they wore out their welcome?
Or perhaps maybe, Alabama should not get all worked up over the past and get on with its life.
It is not like their aren’t enough current problems and issues to occupy its time!

some sources show the entities that brought the slaves here are still in business with quite deep pockets.
the british east india tea company (whose flag ours is modeled after) and Alex Brown who both moved and continue to move opium as well a ye old slave trade.
Alex Brown sets the value of stocks from what I hear.
Yes history is alive and well, and the future run by the usual suspects.

Did not former slave owners grant black slaves 50 acres and 400 dollars at the end of their service ?
Best that ever happened to most of them and I bet quite a few would agree. Many now are in the upper and middle classes of America. Part of the National identity as Bob demonstrates.
Ask them if they prefer to be back in Africa ?

Thurston…I hear where you are headed w/ that, the so called targeted reparations at companies and individuals with a chronological fiscal linkage to those who directly benefited from slavery. That is a slippery slope of epic proportion and, if you spend 5 quiet minutes thinking about it, is dangerous as can be. It is no more valid a claim than any reparation claim and would usher in an era of litigation that a whole lawyer specialty would arise…that being attorneys who do geneological research and find culprits to seek payment from.

Well spoke by all the above. There is, however, one additional way to address this.
Let’s do it.
Give them the reparations and be done. With the caveat that we’re now done any more rediculous social programs. It’s over. No more special programs, no more special anythings, no more quotas, zilch, zero, zip- abadda bing we’re done. My dad was a slave for the nazis during WWII. He in fact receives a social security check from the German governement each month for four years of slavery (in lieu of 40 acres and a mule). Think his great great great grandchildren should still receive a check every month? That’s what Ed has to say on the matter.

I think some of my ancestors enslaved other of my ancestors but surely not equally. I get must get to file reparations claims against Huns, Russians, Mongols, Vikings, Poles, Germans. Where do I sign up for this?…
