Healthcare isn't what it used to be, Part I

Posted by Felicia Fee Benamon On July - 25 - 2006
We all have depended on the advice of our doctors, on nurses, and healthcare providers to keep us in balance, and in health.  These days, gross negligence is common in today’s hospitals and in the healthcare industry.  People’s lives are in the hands of healthcare providers, so it’s serious that they give people the correct information and correct medical care they need. But that is not always the case.
On a recent Montel Williams show, (Tuesday, July 18th), Montel highlighted “Hospital Horrors.” His guests included people who have suffered from neglectful hospital care:
  • A lady described waking up in the middle of an operation, paralyzed and unable to move.  She then started to feel intense pain; she was able to also hear conversations of the doctors and nurses, and tried to get their attention that she was awake, but was unable to do so.  Somehow, it was brought to the attention of the surgical team that she was indeed awake, and they put her back under.  After surgery, the lady is hysterical, she and her family demanded answers. The surgeon said, “She was awake, we put her back under. Now let’s just get on with her recovery.”  No response from the anesthesiologist.  It was mentioned on the show that during at least 100 operations per day, people wake up in the middle of surgery (from American Society of Anesthesiologists).
  • A doctor’s error led to the slow death of a man’s mother. She was diagnosed with throat cancer. The woman underwent Chemotherapy and was given other drugs to dull the effects of the chemo.  Within 72 hrs, she became weak, the tests were misread.  The man’s mother died a slow and painful death while the only response from the doctor to the man was, “I bet you hate me, I killed your mom.” The man sued, but settled.  The hospital also forgot to sign the confidentiality report stating for him to keep quiet about what happened.  That is why he is able to tell this story, and is now a victim’s rights advocate.
  •  A woman went in to surgery; had a surgical tool left in her body.  She complained of pain over a period of 5 yrs. to her doctor who insisted it was nothing.  She finally went to a chiropractor after having back pains.  The chiropractor did an X-ray and found the tool. She sued the hospital that left in the surgical tool and only received… $250,000 for all her pain and suffering over the years (this happened in the state of California; the caps for medical malpractice is $250,000)!  The doctor who left the tool in her body is still practicing medicine.
  • Another woman had surgery…afterwards had extreme pain; described stomach of “being on fire” to the nurse.  The nurse assured her it’s nothing.  But the nurse took a look anyway and freaked out, left to go get the doctor. The woman is told she will need to go back into the operating room. This continued over and over, 5 times over a period of 3 days!  What happened?  During the initial surgery, the woman contracted a flesh eating disease. The incision she received during this surgery was larger than she was supposed to receive.  Her repeated trips to the operating room were important to keep ahead of the flesh eating disease by cutting it out of the woman.  If this woman hadn’t of said a thing about the “fiery feeling” in her stomach, she’d be dead.
These testimonies are frightening!  When have some in the medical field become so lackadaisical about patient care? It seems to me that there are way too many in the field that practice medicine only for the money.  But I do want to be quick to say that there are many others in the medical field who value every human life that comes through the hospital doors as if they were a family member.
I applaud healthcare providers who put in excessive time, love, and patience to care for their patients…they have a heart of gold. But there is too much scandal going on in our nation’s healthcare industry.
Another shocking story, which came out the same day Montel’s Hospital Horrors show aired, involved 4 patients at a New Orleans area hospital who were given a lethal concoction of drugs during the Hurricane Katrina disaster, by a doctor and 2 nurses.   The doctor and nurses have been arrested for second-degree murder.
Those who practice medicine should be in the business of promoting life and well being, and the finest of care they can possibly give.  And patients should be able trust that they are in good hands, and not fear that their doctor would consider snuffing out their life during any situation which appears grim.
This is such a big issue… a broad issue to cover in just one article.  Look for my following piece covering the growing problem of government interference into the area regarding people’s health, unrealistic views on health, and healthcare fraud.
Let’s get the power back into the hands of the average citizen.  Knowledge about neglectful incidents on behalf of some in the medical industry should be well publicized.  It’s happening all too frequently, and for the medical industry to start to heal, these incidents must be addressed and dealt with.

Escalation of terrorism will not stop at U.S. borders

Posted by Felicia Fee Benamon On July - 18 - 2006
It’s only a matter of time before America is hit again with a terror attack.  Because of  the rise in terror incidents in other nations, Americans must not think that we will not be hit again.  However, our attitudes must be that of vigilance and strength as we come together and realize just who we are fighting.
We are fighting individuals who have a mentality to gleefully behead innocents.  Such is the case of two American soldiers, Kristian Menchaca and Thomas Tucker, who were brutally murdered, their bodies desecrated after being taken hostage by a group associated with Al-Qaeda in Iraq.   Americans should see, over and over, what terrorists are capable of doing.
We need our resolve back.
(See below: The Jawa Report beheading video and pictures…WARNING: Pictures are graphic)
My sincerest condolences go to the families of the fallen soldiers.
This is one way, however, that I want to drive home the barbaric methods of Islamic terrorists, and to ignite the ire of Americans toward such evil deeds.  Americans are in a serious fight, and we are not to sit back and think all is well, we haven’t been attacked.  That does NOT mean we are safe or immune.
The escalating violence in other parts of the world, such as the recent terror attack in Mumbai, India in which 200+ people have died, should be another wake up call.  Not to mention, Israel has had its share of troubles.  But the country continues to fight back, and fight they should, if they are to survive.  Israel is surrounded by her enemies, and continues to suffer unwarranted attacks, so Israel must fight back to send a message to her enemies that Israelis will not be intimidated or crushed.
Israel is a model to which the U.S. should follow.  The country has stepped up its offensive, not only against Hamas (responsible for the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier), but Hezbollah, a terror group based in Lebanon who is financed and backed by Syria and Iran.  Hezbollah has been responsible for the kidnapping of two more Israeli soldiers in the past week. The kidnapping, Israel has said, is an “act of war.”  In response, Israel has massively thrown down the gauntlet on Lebanon, air and sea.  Lebanon’s International airport was bombed, as Israel tries to choke off supply lines to Hezbollah.  Hezbollah’s headquarters has been destroyed.  This is all for the better, to destroy the base of terrorist operations.
The goal of Islamic terrorists, often backed by other rogue nations has been to agitate and irritate Israel. No matter how much land or efforts on the part of Israel to negotiate with the Palestinians for peace, it is never enough.  As attacks continue on Israel, I am glad that President Bush has stated that, “Israel has the right to defend herself.”  We have Israel’s back. Israel is serving notice on her enemies that she will not be intimidated or crushed!
America!  We’ve become too tolerant, being careful not to offend.  All too often, America allows politics to get in the way of our better judgment when faced with how to correctly deal with the face of evil in the form of Islamic terror.  There is no other way to deal with it than to cut it down, get rid of it.  Terrorism will continue and the only way to combat it is to fight it head on, and to keep the perpetrators of terror on the defense.
Perhaps Americans should see FLIGHT 93, the newly released video of the heroic crew of United Airlines Flight 93, who took back the aircraft from terrorists and landed the plane in a field in Pennsylvania. They averted a HUGE catastrophe where the terrorists’ supposed targets included the Capitol building or White House.
Americans need the resolve, strength, and the grit of Todd Beamer and crew.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich, has stated that World War III has begun.  In my opinion, World War III began on Sept. 11, 2001, when Islamic terrorists declared war on all who will not convert to Islam.  Does that alarm you?  It should.  Many people on the face of this earth practice a religion other than Islam.  The example of the Mumbai attacks should give one an indication that terrorists want to wipe out anyone who doesn’t submit to Islam.
It’s time to get in gear!  We truly have a fight on our hands!

Lusting for power and control over America

Posted by Felicia Fee Benamon On July - 11 - 2006

This great land called America is not some prize to be won. It’s a gift by Almighty God, a gift of unexplained beauty to be enjoyed by all.  Just as the land is precious, so are the people of America. No one group of people completely rules or dominates.

Our forefathers came to America in search of a better life, and yearned to share their faith and beliefs with those who occupied this land. Mistakes were made throughout our history, but the overall intent surely was not to be in conflict, but to live side by side in harmony.
Today, our country is in danger from so many groups who want complete dominance over the rest of Americans…they want to suppress others instead of reaching out and helping each other to rise and be a great nation together.
I am disturbed by efforts to take over America by radical Islamists. We cannot forget the inflammatory rhetoric by Islamic radicals who demonstrate in our streets declaring, “Islam will dominate the world,” and at the same time, they are holding up pictures of the Islamic flag flying over the White House.  This is all happening on our soil, yet our government does very little to crack down on those who choose to promote such hatred. There are terror cells and training camps set up right here in America. It’s time to get tough and crack down on these centers of evil propaganda.
MECha, an organization which seeks to retake the southwestern states of America, (they call it Aztlan) has been involved in college campuses across America since the 60’s.  The Brown Berets of Aztlan are another militant group who wishes to return the southwest to Mexico, or “Reconquista” as they call it.  Their spouting of racial hatred against American citizens is nothing new.  Miguel Perez of Cal State Northridge MECha talks of the “liberation of Aztlan,” and says that he prefers a communist style government to “expel the non-chicanos.”
(See article: MEChA: A Vehicle of Hatred)
With the talk of America possibly merging with Canada, and Mexico, the above mentioned groups may not have to fight much at all. Thanks to the rich elite and other powerful forces in our government who are working to erase our borders to the north and south…all in the name of greed and power.
Where is their allegiance to America, the country our great forefathers fought so hard to build? Will they sell out and give in to the temptation to rule and control the populace of America?
(See article: Creating a North American Community…)
America was NOT meant to be overpowered by one group of people.  And it seems the freedoms of Americans are under attack from so many forces within our country. The ACLU has been active to make sure of that.  One cannot give God the praise He is due in public without someone becoming offended and the ACLU stepping in. The Mount Soledad cross in San Diego is one of many religious symbols that have been threatened by the ACLU. 75% of San Diegans voted for the Federal Government to step in and save the cross and to classify it as a war memorial.  But comments regarding the vote from ACLU attorney James McElroy say it all:
“It still doesn’t mean a damn thing”…”Voters should have never voted on it. It’s a waste of taxpayers’ money,” said McElroy.

(See article: San Diegans vote to save cross)

It’s not a waste of taxpayer money when clearly the will of the people has been spoken!  And the people have declared that they want the cross to stay!

It doesn’t matter to the ACLU if the majority of Americans want religious symbols to stay in place, they will fight to the death to have them removed…even if one person makes a squeak about them.  This is NOT what freedom of religion is about… it’s not about the freedom to remove precious symbols of our faith because a few are offended.
I must say that the ACLU has meddled FAR too much in the historic ties America has with Christianity.  When are the majority of Americans going to rise and say to groups like the ACLU…”WE ARE OFFENDED! NOW, KNOCK IT OFF!”
The secularists and the far-left are also busy pushing immorality and anti-Americanism throughout our beloved country.  To them, America is the cause of so many of the world’s ills.  The sad thing is, they will succeed in their efforts to demean and destroy America’s credibility and moral fiber if ordinary Americans continue to go about life as usual.  This is happening all around us and many Americans act as if they are immune to our society slowly crumbling before our eyes.
The patriotic Woody Guthrie song This Land is Your Land speaks about our great nation and how we are meant to share in its bountiful blessings:
This land is your land, this land is my land From California to the New York Island From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me.
Are we living to the standard mentioned above? Are we joining together and sharing in the many blessings God has bestowed upon us?  Surely not!
We are facing a grim future with so many negative forces vying for control and domination of
America.  Let’s put the brakes on anti-American groups who wish to control America, or else!  If they can’t have America in their grasp, they want her brought to her knees.
American citizens truly have a fight on their hands.  But we MUST arise from complacency and be bold and strong.  The sooner we stand up and fight back, the easier it will be.  I would hate to see our continued complacency towards the disintegration of our country be later replaced by complete shock as the work of our adversaries is completed.  I hope it will never come to that.
So please rise up America, and take a stand!

To all the workaholics out there (that describes most Americans)…

Posted by Felicia Fee Benamon On July - 4 - 2006

“He enjoys true leisure who has time to improve his soul’s estate.”–Henry David Thoreau
There have been so many times I’ve heard people say, “If only I had more time in the day…”, or, “I’ve just got so much work to do, so little time.” But when are we as a society, going to slow down and start taking time out for ourselves and those we care about?
A recent study by CareerBuilder.com found that 28 percent of working fathers view their jobs as having a negative effect on the bonds with their children.  An astounding 44 percent admitted they would settle for reduced pay (up to 5 percent) for more quality time with their kids.
What does that say about most Americans’ lifestyles in regards to work?? We don’t know how to slow down, even when we need to do so.  We continue in this mindless schedule, day after day, putting work first when it should be family first.  Our careers are a means to supply our families with necessities and the good things in life.  And it provides us a chance to offer our unique talents.  But all of that is meaningless when we are not allowing ourselves to connect and truly value time spent with loved ones, even when our very being screams …STOP!
Americans are working longer hours…we are, in general, workaholics.  Americans surpass  Europeans by working 9 weeks more a year (350 hours more).  Among the industrialized nations, Americans work the longest hours.  The Japanese work long and hard, but even they know how to take breaks.  The answer to a demanding schedule for the Japanese is to take mid-day siestas.  Hotels in Japan offer rooms for an hour to tired businesspeople to take catnaps.  Maybe as Americans, we should take a cue from them to rejuvenate our bodies and slow down during the day.
People are stressed out, and stress leads to all sorts of health problems. Anxiety for one. Never before do so many people rely on prescription drugs to combat their anxiety. The anxiety can be alleviated if many people were allowed to take time off from work, and if they realized that working yourself to death is not good for anyone.
Take time to breathe, relax. Many wonder why our health suffers and why there are so many incidents of road rage. It’s not a disorder, as defined as Intermittent Explosive Disorder, or(IED) as study by the National Institutes of Mental Health suggests.  What road rage is…a characteristic of a frustrated, tired, and worn out driver who allows any little thing to get them upset.  I’m surprised there aren’t more people having fits behind the wheel in rush hour traffic, we have so much on our plates these days.
Imagine if we could cut down on the number of people taking drugs for sleeplessness, anxiety, and moodiness. All by allowing people the time to take vacations and spend time with their family.  Wouldn’t we see incidents like road rage cut in half?
The only way to balance work and home life is to make priority changes. What is most important in your life? Are you willing to step back, take a look at your health and the well being and that of your family and change your lifestyle pattern?
Until Americans realize that work should not envelop every other responsibility in life, we will remain unhappy, grumpy, worn out, and frustrated, and strung out on drugs that do us more harm in the long run. It’s time to get a better perspective on what life is about.
Spend time taking care of yourself. You cannot be replaced, there is only one “you” in the world.  No one is any good to society if they are always stressed out. Refusing to put down the work once we are home also has a negative effect on our close relationships, so put that work down!
Let’s keep all of this in mind during the 4th of July holiday and beyond, because we all need vacation time (or at least some “down time”) to keep our sanity.
Let’s take time for ourselves!
